Location and Directions:

Highland is located along I-580 Freeway in Oakland, CA. The nearest airport is Oakland International Airport, but access to San Francisco and San Jose International airports is also easy.

From I-580 Eastbound, take Exit 22 toward Park Blvd and merge onto MacArthur Blvd, turn right at 13th Ave, then turn left at E. 31st St. A public parking garage is located on the right, just after the main hospital entrance and ambulance bay.

From I-580 Westbound, take the exit toward 14th Ave/Park Blvd, turn left at Beaumont Ave, then turn right at E. 31st St. A public parking garage is located on the left, just before the ambulance bay and main hospital entrance.

The closest BART station is Fruitvale (for route information and timetables, check From there, AC Transit bus 62 (West Oakland/Fruitvale BART) is a 15-minute ride to E. 31st St/Vallecito Pl stop at the Highland campus.

From the Lake Merrit BART station, there is a free shuttle to and from Highland that runs from 5:30am - 8:30pm.

Andrew Herring, MD Now Boarded in Pain and Addiction Medicine
Highland Faculty Andrew Herring, MD recently passed the subspecialty board certification examination in Pain and Addiction Medicine. Andrew has been a pioneer in pain management at Highland, leading the reduction in opioid prescribing in our department, promoting the use of multi-modal analgesia, as well as ultrasound-guided regional analgesia. Gene Hern, MD MS Passes EMS Boards!
Gene Hern, MD MS has passed the EMS boards, and is now subspecialty board certified in EMS and Prehospital Medicine. Dr Hern was Program Director for eight years, and now serves as the Vice Chair for Education overseeing our QA and EMS curricula. He also serves as the medical director for the EMS service providers in Berkeley and Contra Costa County.
